BMW Celebrates Production of Three Million Electrified Vehicles

On May 27, 2025, in Munich, the BMW Group celebrated a significant milestone, their three-millionth electrified vehicle rolled off the production line.

It is a BMW 330e Touring model in striking Portimao Blue, intended for the British market. This result confirms the BMW Group’s growing commitment to electric mobility and their ability to quickly adapt to market demands.

During 2024, every fourth vehicle sold by the BMW Group was either a fully electric or plug-in hybrid model. A special feature of BMW production is that electrified and conventional models can be assembled on the same production line, enabling greater flexibility and efficiency.

Milan Nedeljković, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for production, emphasized that all plants in the global production network are ready for electromobility, paving the way for further growth in this segment.

BMW began its journey toward electric mobility back in 2013, with the launch of the BMW i3 model at the Leipzig plant. Due to its special architecture, that model was produced in a specially adapted facility and was the BMW Group’s first mass-produced electric vehicle. In the same period, the innovative plug-in hybrid BMW i8 was also introduced, laying the foundations for the company’s electrified future.

Over the past ten years, BMW has systematically integrated electric vehicles into its global production strategy. Initially, plug-in hybrids were assembled on shared lines with conventionally powered vehicles, while today numerous BMW plants simultaneously produce fully electric and hybrid models, showing how seamless and efficient the transition to electric mobility has become.

Electrification strategy on a global level

BMW’s electrification strategy covers the whole world. The MINI Cooper SE model was introduced in Oxford in 2019, and electric vehicle production has expanded to China, the USA, Mexico, South Africa, and other countries. In Germany, all BMW plants today produce fully electric cars, including the iX and i4 models from Munich and Dingolfing.

Plants in Brazil, India, and Thailand also contribute to the global production of electrified vehicles. In the future, the start of production of fully electric vehicles is expected in Spartanburg (USA) from 2026 and in San Luis Potosí (Mexico) from 2027, as part of the launch of the new generation of Neue Klasse models.

Innovation center for electric drivetrains

A key role in this transformation is played by BMW’s Competence Center for Electric Drive System Production in Dingolfing, which has been operating since the beginning of i3 production. By 2022, more than 500,000 electric drive units were produced there annually. Today, production of the fifth generation of batteries and electric drivetrains has also been expanded to Regensburg, Leipzig, and Spartanburg.

BMW is already preparing for the sixth generation of electric drivetrains, which will premiere with the Neue Klasse models at the new plant in Debrecen, Hungary, at the end of this year.

The three-millionth electrified vehicle is not just a numerical record, but also confirmation of BMW’s commitment to innovation in mobility, production agility, and readiness for an electric future on a global level.
