“We are also recording an increase in the number of younger families in which one household member works, but they do not have enough funds for all financial needs and obligations throughout the month”, emphasized Jelena Lončar, director of Caritas of the Archdiocese of Zagreb.
World Day of the Poor was yesterday. It was established by Pope Francis six years ago with the message – “Let us not love with words, but with deeds”. In Croatia, as many as every fifth resident is at risk of poverty, and the situation is further worsened by rising inflation, which is why more and more people need help. On this occasion, Caritas organized lunch and the collection of aid for those most in need. The economic crisis and rising inflation have pushed many to the brink of poverty, writes HRT.
“We are also recording an increase in the number of younger families in which one household member works, but they do not have enough funds for all financial needs and obligations throughout the month”, emphasized Jelena Lončar, director of Caritas of the Archdiocese of Zagreb.
With full hands and open hearts, Caritas employees and volunteers help them. Those who care daily for the poor – in Rijeka too they prepared a hot meal. The homeless shelter “Ruže sv. Franje” almost has no free bed, and the doors of the social grocery store are being knocked on more and more often.
“We have very good support from our fellow citizens, they respond to all our actions. We manage to fill our shelves and that is actually all the joy of sharing and giving”, emphasized Nela Pujić, volunteer at the social grocery store and homeless shelter “Ruže sv. Franje”.
Every fifth citizen of Croatia is at risk of poverty, and between that and homelessness – there is a thin line.
