Even Germans Find It Expensive, Head to a Neighboring Country for Haircuts

As for salons in Berlin, hair coloring and cutting has cost 150 euros since January, whereas before it was 90 euros. Highlights for long hair are available for 230 euros, whereas before they cost 130 euros.

Many hairdressers in Germany are raising their prices due to inflation, so more and more citizens are traveling to Poland, where hairdressing services are significantly cheaper. Thus, for example, many people from Germany go to the Polish town of Slubice, which is separated from Frankfurt by a bridge over the Oder River. Clients also come to that town from Berlin. In Polish hair salons, for 55 euros a client can get highlights, a haircut, and a blow-dry for long hair, while in Berlin the same service costs on average from 150 to 200 euros. Even with a round-trip ticket for a regional train, which costs 20.80 euros, the savings are almost 75 euros.

“100 euros and more for a visit to the hairdresser, I can't afford that,” said a resident of Germany who came to Poland for a hairstyle, reports Fenix magazin.

“Last winter I discovered a hair salon in Slubice because I was denied access to my regular hairdresser in Germany, I was not vaccinated against COVID-19,” explains the 63-year-old woman from Frankfurt. After that, she continues, inflation drove her to Slubice. She took a day off to come to Poland.

Although they have a large number of clients from Germany, Polish hairdressers have certain problems. The owner of one of the hair salons complains about inflation, which in Poland exceeds 16 percent. Her monthly electricity bill increased from 100 to 240 euros per month, and the rent for the premises also went up. Thus, hairdressers have also become 15 to 20 percent more expensive in recent months.

According to research by the Central Association of German Crafts, 70 percent of personal service trades expect a drop in sales.
