Germany by Far the Largest EU Economy, Croatia Ranks 20th

The value of the European Union economy in 2025 amounted to 18.8 trillion euros, according to the latest Eurostat data.

This is the total value of goods and services produced in all 27 member states.

Germany remains by far the largest economy in the European Union and generates almost a quarter of the European economy. Its gross domestic product was worth 4.47 trillion euros, accounting for 23.8 percent of the Union's total GDP.

It is followed by France with 2.99 trillion euros and a share of 15.9 percent, and Italy with 2.26 trillion euros, or 12 percent. These 3 countries together generate more than half of the total economy of the European Union.

Croatia accounts for 0.5 percent of total GDP

Croatia's GDP in 2025 amounted to almost 93 billion euros, representing 0.5 percent of the Union's total economy. By GDP value, Croatia ranked 20th among the 27 member states.

Ahead of Croatia are Bulgaria with 116 billion euros and Slovakia with 136.8 billion euros. Behind it are Luxembourg with 89.5 billion, Lithuania with 84.3 billion, and Slovenia with 70.5 billion euros.

Malta has the smallest economy

The smallest economy in the Union was Malta, whose GDP was worth 24.6 billion euros and accounted for 0.1 percent of the European economy. Cyprus, Estonia, and Latvia each accounted for 0.2 percent.

The size of the economy is not the same as the standard of living

These data show the total size of the economy, but not how well the citizens of an individual country live. Total GDP is strongly influenced by population size and the price level. For comparing living standards, GDP per capita, purchasing power, wages, and cost of living are therefore more important.
