Major Changes Coming for German Pensioners

The year 2023 has so far brought numerous changes to recipients of German pensions. Among other things, pensioners have also been receiving a decent increase since this year.

As German media write, the month of October brings certain changes for pensioners, writes Fenix Magazin.

A lot will change for pensioners in October 2023. The month is particularly exciting for two birth groups: anyone born in November 1957 can receive the standard old-age pension at 65 years and 11 months without any deductions from October 1, 2023.

Retirement without deductions also awaits those born in August 1959 – but only if they were insured for a particularly long time, that is, if they have 45 years of service.

Then retirement at 64 years and two months is possible. It is only important that the persons mentioned actively submit their pension applications themselves. The pension is not granted automatically.

Tax return deadline

For pensioners, the deadline for the 2022 tax return also expires in October. For the stated tax year, the deadline ends on October 2, 2023.

The deadline was originally supposed to end in July 2023, but was subsequently extended by two months. Since September 30, 2023 is a Saturday, the last day for submission is the following working day. In this case, that will be Monday, October 2, 2023.

Deadline for heating cost subsidy expires

The heating cost subsidy for heating with wood, oil, or other fuels that are not piped will also cease to apply at the end of October 2023.

The application for this can be submitted until October 20, 2023. The amount of compensation is 80 percent of the additional costs for the subsidized energy source. You can receive relief of up to 2,000 euros per household, writes Fenix Magazin.

From October 2023, the procedure for submitting an application to determine the need for care is changing.

Statutory long-term care insurance funds must decide on the application for determining the level of care within certain legal deadlines.

If the deadline is exceeded, they must pay the insured person 70 euros per week of delay, German media write.
