May Brings Changes for These Workers in Germany: Who Will Get a €1,000, €600, €450 or €180 Bonus?

Employees in Germany in some sectors can look forward to one-time payments, special payments, or bonuses in May.

This includes people with the following occupations:

– Construction workers and painters and varnishers

– Employees in the German paper, cardboard, and plastics industry

– Employees in the painting trade

Employees in construction as well as painters and varnishers can expect special payments in May. The currently valid collective agreement in construction had already provided for a wage increase from April 1, and now in May an additional one-time payment of 450 euros follows. With one condition: special payments are available only in West Germany, but in 2026 income equalization between the west and east should be achieved.

Employees in the German paper, cardboard, and plastics industry will also receive one-time payments. This was announced by the Verdi union and the main association for paper and plastics processing after the fifth round of negotiations in mid-April.

On May 1, 2023, a one-time payment of 1,000 euros tax-free and free of charges will follow.

Painters and varnishers have also recently received special allowances.

The newly agreed collective agreement not only provides for higher pay, but also includes an inflation bonus of 600 euros.

The one-time payment is exempt from tax and social security.

For part-time employees, it is paid proportionally, while trainees receive 180 euros.
