From July 2025, German citizens who care for family members or are themselves care recipients can expect significant relief thanks to new measures being introduced by the German government.
It concerns the introduction of the so-called “relief budget” (Entlastungsbudget), which will amount to 3,539 euros annually and will allow the use of care services for eight weeks, an increase compared to the previous six weeks, writes Fenix Magazin.
Caring for elderly or ill family members often represents a major physical and psychological challenge, and in addition it carries significant financial expenses. More than five million people in Germany, who are care recipients or members of their families, face high costs of aids and services on a daily basis, which often exceed the amounts covered by existing care benefits. Although these costs are lower than those of accommodation in institutions for the elderly and infirm, they still represent a serious burden on the household budget. Additional complexity is created by issues such as the right to various forms of support, the possibility of substitute care in the event of illness or annual leave, and navigating the often complicated administrative system.
Until now, users had two separate types of support at their disposal: substitute care (Verhinderungspflege) in the amount of 1,685 euros annually and short-term care (Kurzzeitpflege), which amounted to up to 1,854 euros annually. Although these funds could be combined, users had to be familiar with numerous rules and deadlines, and use was limited to a maximum of six weeks per year. With the new measures, these two types of support are being merged into a single “relief budget”, which not only increases the total amount to 3,539 euros annually, but also extends the period of use to eight weeks.
This significant change brings numerous advantages to people who need care and their families. First of all, the administrative burden is reduced, since users will have simpler access to funds and greater flexibility in their use. Experts point out that such a measure represents an important step toward relieving families who care for their loved ones, because it enables easier planning and more secure financial support at moments when it is most needed.
The new system, which comes into force in July 2025, should bring significant relief to millions of citizens faced with the challenges of care, providing them with greater security and support in everyday life (source: Fenix Magazin, 2024).
