Thinking of Moving? Ireland Offers Up to €84,000 to Renovate Abandoned Properties

If you have been thinking about a change of environment and dreaming of moving from Croatia, Ireland has offered a program that sounds incredibly tempting, with an amount reaching an astonishing 84,000 euros.

However, it is crucial to clarify immediately that this is not a direct payment for the act of moving to the Irish island itself, but rather a generous financial incentive intended exclusively for the thorough renovation of abandoned properties. This means that Ireland is not paying you to move there, but is co-financing your investment in the revitalization of dilapidated property, which is a difference that must be understood before applying.

This initiative is part of the Irish state policy called 'Our Living Islands' (Our Living Islands), and the full story about the program, which is currently the most generous in Europe, is also covered by the British portal Daily Mail UK. The primary goal of this project is to counter depopulation and revive small, remote communities on twenty-three inhabited offshore islands, located mostly along the western coast. Given that these places have faced a persistent outflow of young people, the Government is using these incentives to attract a new wave of residents who are ready to become investors in a new home and bring life to abandoned neighborhoods.

The maximum subsidy amount is up to 84,000 euros, and the money is paid out to cover property renovation costs, which requires detailed paperwork and strong evidence. It is important to emphasize that the funds are not received in advance, nor as compensation for arrival, but are paid out in stages and exclusively against submitted invoices, proving that the works were actually carried out, which strictly ties the program to renovation. The goal is for abandoned houses to be refurbished and permanently put into use, thereby restoring island infrastructure and also ensuring a vital workforce.

As for the properties themselves, the conditions are extremely strict. The house must be officially recorded in the register as vacant or neglected; it is not enough for it to simply look abandoned. Furthermore, there are two categories of property age, depending on the type of incentive: the house must have been built before 2007, or in some cases before 1993, which indicates different versions of the program relating to the condition and type of property. One of the better-known islands included in the program is the Aran Islands, also known as the filming location of the movie 'The Banshees of Inisherin', and it includes Inishmaan, Inisheer, and Inishmore.

Although the program is not exclusively tied to Irish citizenship, it does not guarantee or provide any visa, residence permit, or work permit, which are a prerequisite for living and working on the island. This means that potential candidates who are not from the EU must independently resolve their entire immigration status before embarking on the application process for renovation, which in practice represents a major obstacle and an additional requirement.

Finally, the most interesting condition, which defines a unique lifestyle, is that the house must be located on an island that is not connected to the Irish mainland by a bridge or causeway, and is often cut off even by regular tides. This requirement clearly shows that Ireland is not only looking for investors, but also for people who are ready to take on a full commitment to remote, and sometimes isolated, island life. Ireland offers financial assistance of up to 84,000 euros, but only to those who are ready to invest time, effort, and patience in renovation, with full awareness of the challenges of life offshore.
