Vienna Is the Best-Connected City in Europe by Rail

VIENNA – According to the 2022 report by the leading network of city tourism organizations in Europe, City Destinations Alliance (CityDNA), Vienna is the best-connected city in Europe by rail.

Cities such as Paris, Tokyo and New York remained at the top of the list of the most visited destinations, while some new cities, such as Buenos Aires and Seoul, broke onto the global scene. Digital nomads are becoming an increasingly numerous population, which is affecting the way cities operate.

The report represents, as the Vienna authorities announced, a key source of information on tourism statistics in cities, as it provides insight into travel and tourism trends in cities around the world, analyzes changes in demand, popular destinations, and new travel habits in urban areas.

The results show that European city tourism is improving despite the enormous consequences of the coronavirus pandemic over the past years. The growth rate of overnight stays increased significantly in 111 out of 115 cities from 26.4 to 43.1 percent. The most popular cities for 2022 are London, Paris and Istanbul.

The report highlights the importance of sustainability and addresses the impact of tourism on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. In addition, traveler preferences were examined in detail, with the summer months being the busiest time for travel.

German and Swiss cities have the highest number of international trains. With an average of 126.9 international trains per day last year, Vienna ranks fifth on the European city ranking. However, if the number of connected countries and stations is considered, Vienna is the best-connected city in Europe by rail, the Vienna authorities said.
