The average net salary in Croatia in July amounted to 1,540 euros, but that figure still does not best describe what most employees see in their bank account.

The median salary was almost 200 euros lower, and the differences between sectors are even more pronounced. The data were published on 22 September by the Croatian Bureau of Statistics, and refer to the salaries of employees in legal entities for July 2026.

Salaries are rising year-on-year, but fell in July

The average net salary of 1,540 euros was 1.0% lower than in June. When price growth is taken into account, the real decline amounted to 0.8%.

The picture is still more favorable when July is compared with the same month last year. The average net salary increased nominally by 7.2%, while in real terms, that is after the impact of price growth, it was higher by 3.2%.

That is an important difference. Salaries did rise faster than prices on a yearly basis, but the increase in purchasing power is significantly smaller than the nominal salary growth itself.

The actual salary of half of employees

An even more interesting figure is the median net salary, which amounted to 1,346 euros in July. This simply means that half of employees received 1,346 euros or less, while the other half received that amount or more.

The difference between the average and the median amounts to as much as 194 euros. The reason is the way the average is calculated. A larger number of high salaries can pull the average value upward, even if a large share of employees earn noticeably less.

That is why the figure of an average salary of 1,540 euros does not mean that most employees actually receive approximately that much.

Every fourth employee at 1,024 euros or less

An even clearer picture is provided by the salary distribution. A quarter of employees had a net salary of 1,024 euros or less, while 75% of employees received up to 1,781 euros.

At the very bottom of the scale, the difference is even more visible. DZS states that the threshold of the first decile was 886 euros, which means that 10% of employees received 886 euros or less. On the other hand, the threshold of the ninth decile was 2,339 euros, so only the top 10% of employees were above that level.

It is precisely these data that better show how much salaries in Croatia differ than a single average figure.

From 1,005 to 2,398 euros, depending on the sector

The differences are also large among individual sectors. The highest average net salary in July was paid in air transport and amounted to 2,398 euros.

At the other end is the manufacture of clothing, where the average was only 1,005 euros. The difference between those two sectors thus amounts to as much as 1,393 euros per month.

This also explains why the national average should be read with caution. An employee's salary depends strongly on the sector in which they work, but also on the structure of employees within a particular sector.

Salaries are rising, but the average still hides a wide range

The main message of the July data is not only that the average salary amounts to 1,540 euros. More importantly, half of employees receive 1,346 euros or less, a quarter at most 1,024 euros, while in the best-paid sectors the average exceeds 2,000 euros.

Salaries in Croatia continue to rise on a yearly basis and this growth is for now outpacing price growth. However, when you scratch below the average, it becomes clear why a large number of employees find it hard to recognize themselves in the official figure of 1,540 euros.
