Construction Tops the List: Analysis Reveals Which Jobs Make People Happiest
05/06/2025

More and more experts, employers, and workers themselves recognize that the quality of a workplace is not measured only by the level of pay, but also by other factors, such as a sense of purpose, opportunities for advancement, and good relationships with other employees.
One of the most comprehensive analyses of this issue comes from a study conducted by TollFreeForwarding.com, based on data from Glassdoor. According to six criteria: culture and values, diversity and inclusion, work-life balance, compensation, opportunities for advancement, and the quality of senior management, the authors of the study evaluated the most important industries according to overall employee satisfaction.
Construction: An example of an industry that surprises and inspires
First place in the ranking went to the construction sector. With an average score of 72.2 out of a possible 100 points, construction proved to be an exceptionally stable and satisfaction-filled work environment. It received particularly high marks in terms of culture and sense of value, as well as compensation and opportunities for advancement. In addition, experts point out that a pleasant work atmosphere and quality interpersonal relationships play a key role in retaining workers and increasing their satisfaction, even in demanding field working conditions.
Although the sector is currently recording excellent business results and high demand for workers, it also faces challenges such as rising material costs, inflation, and a shortage of qualified labor, which may affect the sector’s long-term stability. Despite this, construction remains attractive due to opportunities for professional development, job security, and employers’ recognizable efforts to continuously improve working conditions and reward employees’ efforts.
Contrary to the perception of physical labor as a necessary compromise, these data point to something deeper: in an environment where the rules are clear, development is possible, and effort is recognized, even a "blue-collar" job can be a source of professional satisfaction and long-term motivation.
Five industries that were rated the best in 2024:
- Construction – 72.2
- Accounting and taxes – 71.9
- Manufacturing – 71.75
- Technology – 69.6
- Healthcare – 67.2
Physical jobs are experiencing a kind of rehabilitation
It is particularly significant that alongside construction, other industries with a strong presence of physical labor, such as manufacturing, are also highly ranked. The manufacturing sector, for example, achieved the highest score in the category of diversity and inclusion, and in addition recorded substantial growth in new hiring, as much as 46% in 2023.
Why are some jobs 'happier' than others? According to the analysis, satisfaction is not the product of just one variable. Instead, it is a complex network of factors that includes a sense of purpose, the quality of interpersonal relationships, work-life balance, as well as the opportunity to achieve personal development through work.
Sectors that offer predictability, clear paths for advancement, and organizations that invest in internal relationships rank particularly high. Workers in such environments know where they are, where they are going, and feel that they are seen along the way.
Jason O’Brien, Chief Operating Officer of TollFreeForwarding.com, summed up the results in a simple message:
"Employee satisfaction today is not a luxury, it is a prerequisite for stability. Organizations that neglect culture, development, and fair compensation simply will not be able to retain people."
Conclusion: what does the satisfaction ranking show us?
Sometimes the answers to seemingly complex questions are simple: people want a job that makes sense, where they are valued and where they can grow. What this study further confirms is that such jobs do not belong exclusively to highly educated, urban-oriented sectors. They can also be found in workshops, on construction sites, in manufacturing plants – wherever there is good organization, human respect, and clear rules of the game.
