German Couple Collected Plastic Bottles for a Year — Here’s How Much They Earned

A GERMAN married couple, Dominik (28) and Jale (30), set a record in collecting returnable packaging, which they handed in at supermarkets in one day. For the plastic waste they collected over the course of a year, they earned more than 1300 euros.

The couple from the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein aimed to collect as many empty bottles as possible, and when they tried to cash them in, their biggest obstacle was finding a store that could accept such a large quantity of plastic packaging. In the end, they earned a total of 1358.31 euros, or about 10,200 kuna, reports Fenix magazin.

They also made a video about their undertaking, in which they point out that they stuffed the bottles into more than 100 large garbage bags. Given that the fee per bottle is 25 cents, it can be concluded that the married couple collected more than five thousand bottles in a year.

Otherwise, when buying returnable packaging in Germany, a deposit of 25 cents (about 1.9 kuna) is paid, and from January 1 of next year it will also be introduced for fruit and vegetable juice packaging, which was previously exempt. Thus, almost all single-use plastic beverage bottles will be subject to the return fee.
