Germany Introduces Gas Tax for Consumers

GERMANY has announced the introduction of a fee of 2.4 cents per kilowatt hour of gas from October in order to help importers affected by additional costs due to dwindling supplies of Russian gas.

High energy prices have become the dominant political topic in Europe's largest economy as living costs soar, partly due to the war in Ukraine. The fee was set by Trading Hub Europe, a body founded by various gas distributors in the country.

The charge is intended to help gas importers who have to buy more expensive gas from suppliers outside Russia and are suffering huge losses. The levy will officially come into force on 1 October, but it is not expected to affect gas bills until November or December due to regulations that protect consumers from price changes.
