Is Germany Introducing Radical Urban Speed Limits?
01/11/2023

There are MORE AND MORE cities in Germany advocating the introduction of radical speed limits.
Back in 2021, an initiative was launched in France to reduce speed limits in cities from 50 to 30 km/h. A similar initiative also exists in Germany, and it was launched in 2021 by some German cities, such as Augsburg, Ulm, Hanover, Leipzig, and Freiburg.
Last spring, Berlin also joined the initiative. Now, almost every working day one municipality joins the project, said a member of the Livable Cities initiative for Süddeutsche Zeitung. So far, more than 350 cities, municipalities, and districts have joined the initiative.
Members of the initiative complain that so far there has been no willingness in the federal transport ministry in Berlin, or rather no understanding for this issue, but they hope that with greater public pressure this situation will change this year.
Graz first in Europe
The first urban zones with a speed limit of 30 km/h were introduced in Zurich in 1991, while Graz was the first city to introduce a speed limit of 30 km/h throughout the entire urban area, except for main roads. With the introduction of the limit on about 80 percent of city roads, a reduction in the number of traffic accidents was recorded in Graz, and the popularity of cycling increased drastically.
