Lama Plans to Stay in Croatia, Help in Social Work and Start His Own Business Before Returning to Nepal

On the occasion of World Migration Day, for N1 the president of the Association of Nepalese in Croatia, Simon Lama, spoke about how Nepalese people live in Croatia.

Simon Lama works in the human resources management sector. He previously did similar work in Nepal, and besides Croatia, he has also lived in Singapore and Georgia.

About the Nepalese community in Croatia, he said the following: “In Croatia, we have just established our association called the Non-Resident Nepali Association. It is an association that operates in more than 88 countries around the world, and since we established the branch in Croatia, many Nepalese have been coming here to work. There are currently almost 20,000 Nepalese in Croatia.”

“They live in different parts of Croatia and do different jobs, and we decided to establish the association because we do not have an embassy. So, when our compatriots have a problem or need to legalize documents, we act as an intermediary with the Nepalese embassy in Vienna and resolve those problems so they would not be deported to Nepal,” he added.

To Croatia because of the World Cup?

“When Croatia played in the final of the 2018 World Cup, everyone heard about Croatia and decided to come here and look for work,” Lama pointed out.

He also adds that citizens from Nepal living in Croatia are satisfied with their jobs, and he believes that some of them will bring their families and settle in our country long-term.

Their money, Lama says, they mostly save and send to their families in Nepal.

“People are satisfied…”

“When people move to another country, they need some time to learn the language, but if they have at least basic English, they can communicate with people. Some of my Nepalese friends speak Croatian very well too,” said Lama.

He also commented on employers, wages, and working conditions: “Large companies offer good pay, pay wages on time, and people are satisfied, but I assume that several companies also pay the minimum wage. These are some smaller companies, but even some construction ones. People are willing to work hard, but some construction companies do not provide them with protective equipment, so there are problems of that kind.”

Lama plans to stay in Croatia for some more time, help people in the field of social work, and establish his own company, but ultimately, the final goal is to return to Nepal.
