The EU Can No Longer Dictate the Rules: New Priorities and Sacrifices Are Needed

Europe can no longer function as it once did; changes in the world are forcing it to give up some habits that were normal until now, but today are becoming a burden.

The Economist in its analysis which is reported by index.hr states that the European Union must change in order to survive in the new global reality, in the following 5 key points:

Lack of cooperation with Great Britain

The first 'luxury' that the EU can no longer afford is a hostile attitude toward Great Britain. Despite Brexit, Britain remains an important geopolitical and military partner. Instead of unnecessary blockades and conditions in negotiations, Europe should strengthen cooperation, especially when it comes to defense and support for Ukraine.

Imposing its rules on the world

The second habit that no longer works is the attempt to impose European rules on the rest of the world, on the environment, labor, and regulations. At a time when the EU urgently needs to conclude trade agreements, excessive conditions and bureaucracy are no longer sustainable.

Bureaucratic blockades within the Union itself

Third, internal trade in the EU still suffers from excessive bureaucratic obstacles. Although there is constant talk of the 'single market,' differences among states and complicated procedures make cooperation more expensive and more difficult. There are concrete proposals for improvements, but they remain unimplemented.

Ignoring the demographic crisis

Another major threat is demographics; the number of working-age people per retiree is rapidly falling. This means ever greater pressure on pension systems and an ever smaller number of those who can “carry” society. Europe has been ignoring this problem for decades.

Saving on defense

In addition, Europe relied for too long on “peace dividends” and saved on defense. In the new security circumstances, such as the war in Ukraine, this is no longer sustainable. More and more countries must seriously increase defense spending.

In conclusion, The Economist says that it is time to redefine priorities. Helping Ukraine and investing in the welfare state remain key goals, but to preserve them the EU must abandon costly habits that are no longer realistic in today’s world.
