Winter Holidays in Germany: Which Federal State Starts School Break First and Which Last

Pupils and students across Germany are already looking forward to the winter holidays and the festive season.

North Rhine-Westphalia is the first German federal state to begin the holidays on 21 December, followed on the same day by Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony-Anhalt and Saarland.

Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate lag behind and only let pupils and students go on winter holidays on 27 December 2023.

However, 25 and 26 December are public holidays and non-working days, and since 23 and 24 December fall on the weekend, pupils in these two federal states are already off on Friday, 22 December, of course after school classes.

For all other federal states, the holidays begin on 23 December 2023.
