‘I Moved to Ireland to Drive and Never Regretted It’: The Story of a Driver Who Continued His Career at Irish Company Musgrave
10/15/2025

Marko (41) from Slavonski Brod had been thinking about leaving for a long time. He worked as a driver in local distribution, often overtime, in old vehicles and without the security of knowing whether all his effort would be paid for.
'I was exhausted. I worked 12 hours a day, and when the paycheck arrived, I would realize that all that effort was not worth it. That’s when I decided I had to change something,' says Marko.
Today, two years later, he lives in Ireland and drives for Musgrave, a leading Irish company for retail, wholesale, and food distribution with a tradition spanning more than 145 years.
'It was the best decision I made in my career. Here, your work is valued, and life is simpler. The salary arrives every Thursday, down to the cent. No stress, no uncertainty.'
'From day one, you know you’re not alone'
Marko says that what attracted him most to Musgrave was that the company offers a direct contract, without intermediary agencies. 'No messing around. When I landed in Ireland, a taxi was waiting for me at the airport and took me to my accommodation. For the first six weeks, I didn’t pay rent, and later I got accommodation at a subsidized price. Everything was organized - PPS number, bank account, administration. Simply put, everything you need to start living without stress.'
Musgrave also offers reimbursement for the plane ticket (up to 250€), free accommodation for the first 6 weeks, and subsidized accommodation with your own room. 'I live with two other colleagues from Croatia, and the house is modern and tidy. We’re all there for each other. It didn’t take long for me to feel at home.'

Why Ireland?
In recent years, Ireland has become an increasingly popular destination for Croatian drivers. Besides offering higher salaries and safer working conditions, the country is known for its high quality of life, safety, healthcare system, and friendly people.
'Ireland is beautiful, although rainy - haha. People are warm, everything works, public services are excellent, and when you have the support of a company like Musgrave, the transition is really easy,' says Marko.

What does a driver’s working day at Musgrave look like?
'I work in Fonthill, and I complete 6 to 8 deliveries a day between warehouses and stores. The trucks are new, technically sound, and everything is organized down to the smallest detail. The goods are loaded in advance, and we make sure everything is safely secured and properly unloaded.'
All new drivers go through thorough training through the Musgrave Driving Academy, including training for driving on the left side, safety procedures, and getting familiar with the routes. 'They didn’t throw me straight into the fire - I had a mentor who followed me until I was completely ready. Today, I also mentor new drivers from Croatia.'
