Italy’s ‘Dream Island’ Offers €15,000 to New Residents: Here Are the Conditions

Sardinia has launched an ambitious program aimed at reviving its rural areas, which have been struggling for years with continuous population decline.

Regional authorities have decided to offer significant financial incentives to attract people to quieter places far from busy urban centers.

As reported by the British Mirror, new residents may be eligible for non-refundable grants of up to 15,000 euros for relocating to this Mediterranean island. The initiative is primarily aimed at small communities where younger generations are leaving en masse for big cities in search of work, leaving behind empty villages and an exclusively older population.

Strict rules for receiving support

The program is open to anyone willing to register residence in one of the municipalities with fewer than 3,000 inhabitants. Financial support of up to 15,000 euros is intended exclusively for the costs of purchasing or renovating a property, provided that this amount does not exceed 50% of the total investment value. Recipients of the funds commit to permanent settlement within 18 months of the purchase or completion of work on the house. With such measures, the authorities want to ensure that the incentives are used for real living and the revitalization of the area, and not for properties that would serve only for occasional holidays.

Additional bonuses for young families

In addition to the initial amount for resolving housing issues, Sardinia also offers additional monthly incentives for couples who decide to start a family there. Parents can receive around 600 euros per month for the first child and 400 euros for the second child until the child reaches 5 years of age. The president of the region emphasized that these measures have created the conditions for young people to stay and develop the economic structure in the most vulnerable parts of the island. A budget of 45 million euros has been allocated for the entire program, confirming the determination of local authorities in implementing a long-term strategy against demographic decline.

The outlook and future of rural Italy

Although the offer attracts a great deal of attention on social media, it represents a serious attempt to solve a deep structural problem that Italy has been facing for decades. The monetary amount alone will probably not be the only motive for moving, but in combination with a slower pace of life and natural beauty, Sardinia is becoming a competitive destination for those seeking a new beginning. The success of this model will depend on the further development of infrastructure and digital connectivity in the island's interior, which would enable the permanent stay of new residents and the genuine renewal of local communities.
