German retail giant Lidl is entering the final phase of preparations for its long-awaited arrival on the market of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The list of locations where this retail chain will open its doors is becoming increasingly extensive, and the portal BiznisInfo.ba brings an exclusive overview of the cities included in this major investment cycle.

According to available data, these are strategically distributed locations where facilities have already been built, are in an advanced stage of construction, or the collection of the necessary documentation is underway.

The network is expanding from Herzegovina to Posavina

According to information cited by BiznisInfo.ba, Lidl has already concretized its operations in a number of cities across the country. Activities have been confirmed in Sarajevo, Banja Luka, and Mostar as key urban centers. In addition to the metropolises, the German discounter is also positioning itself in cities such as Kakanj, Zvornik, Gradiška, Bihać, Livno, East Sarajevo, Gračanica, Trebinje, Bijeljina, Doboj, and Zenica.

The list does not stop here, as projects in Brčko, Modriča, Laktaši, Travnik, Čapljina, Tešanj, Kiseljak, Čitluk, Živinice, and Prnjavor are also in various stages of implementation. Unofficial sources indicate that the company's management is also seriously considering locations in Široki Brijeg and Sanski Most, but this information has not yet received official confirmation at this time.

The logic behind the choice of locations

An analysis of the locations makes it clear that Lidl does not choose locations randomly. The expansion strategy is thoroughly aligned with two key factors, the consumer potential of the population and the availability of adequate construction land. Simply put, the company opens stores where people have greater purchasing power and where it is possible to find a sufficiently large plot that meets their strict construction and accessibility standards.

Western Herzegovina, a region known for exceptionally high purchasing power within Bosnia and Herzegovina, is currently relatively underrepresented on this map. Given the economic strength of that area, experts predict that it is only a matter of time before Lidl expands its network into that part of the country as well. A similar situation is also noticeable in the Krajina region, where the inclusion of cities such as Cazin and Sanski Most is expected, as soon as complex property-law relations and spatial plans are resolved.

Why is Tuzla still waiting?

Particular public attention is drawn to the fact that Tuzla, as one of the most populous and economically most important cities in the country, still does not have an active Lidl construction site. According to the source BiznisInfo.ba, the reason is not a lack of interest from the German company, but exclusively a technical obstacle. Namely, in Tuzla it is extremely difficult to find a suitable land plot that would meet the specific dimensions and logistical requirements that Lidl sets for its facilities.

On the other hand, Eastern Herzegovina remains less covered primarily for demographic reasons, that is, a smaller population and lower purchasing power, with the exception of Trebinje where construction of the facility is already underway.

When can customers expect the opening?

Many citizens are most interested in the date when they will be able to make their first purchase. Although there is still no official date, Lidl's business practice to date in the countries of the region offers a reliable framework for assessment. The key signal will be the moment when the company announces job openings for store workers, which, according to estimates, is expected during this spring.

The usual procedure dictates that approximately six months pass from the moment of hiring and training staff to the grand opening. Accordingly, it is realistic to expect that the first Lidl stores in Bosnia and Herzegovina will open their doors to customers at the end of the current year or the beginning of next year.

Lidl's entry into the Bosnia and Herzegovina market represents much more than the opening of new stores; it is the arrival of a serious competitor that will inevitably redefine relations in the retail sector. For the average consumer, this as a rule means a better offer and more competitive prices, while for the domestic economy it represents a significant investment impulse and the opening of hundreds of new jobs.

Preparations are proceeding according to the planned pace, and the location map clearly shows the ambition of the German giant to become an indispensable factor in the everyday lives of citizens across BiH.
