Average Net Salary in Zagreb Reaches €1,703: Significant Year-on-Year Increase
05/04/2026

The average monthly paid net salary in Zagreb for January 2026 amounted to 1,703 euros.
This data indicates a slight monthly increase of 0.6%, while compared with the same period of the previous year, a significant jump of 8.9% was recorded. Although the average is rising, data on the median salary of 1,472 euros provide a clearer picture of reality because they show that half of employees in the capital receive an amount lower than that threshold. At the same time, the average gross salary reached 2,443 euros, which is an increase of almost 10% on an annual basis.
Sectoral differences and extreme income ranges
Within Zagreb's economy, a large difference in income levels is noticeable depending on the sector of activity. The highest net salaries were paid in the crude oil and natural gas extraction sector, where the average amounts to 2,628 euros. In contrast, the lowest incomes were recorded in clothing manufacturing, where workers received an average of 1,030 euros net.
The differences are even more pronounced in gross amounts; the highest average gross salary was also recorded in the crude oil and natural gas extraction activity, in the amount of 3,874 euros, while the lowest gross salary was paid in clothing manufacturing and amounted to 1,400 euros.
The capital still significantly above the national average
A comparison with the national level confirms Zagreb's dominant economic position compared to the rest of the country. The average net salary in the Republic of Croatia for January 2026 amounted to 1,511 euros, which is 192 euros less than the amount in the metropolis. While in Zagreb the most profitable sector is mining and quarrying, at the national level air transport leads with an average of 2 352 euros. Clothing manufacturing remains the lowest-paid branch in the entire country, but with an average of 986 euros, it is even lower at the national level than in Zagreb itself.
Economic centralization and its long-term consequences
The continuous trend of salary growth in Zagreb, which consistently exceeds the national average, further highlights the role of the capital as the primary engine of the Croatian economy. Although the growth of the median salary suggests a general improvement in living standards, the difference compared to the average still testifies to the concentration of high incomes in specific sectors. Such developments confirm the stability of Zagreb's labor market, but at the same time emphasize the need for stronger development of other regions in order to mitigate economic disparities within the country.
The data were collected on the basis of official releases from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics and processing by the City Office for Economy, Environmental Sustainability and Strategic Planning for January 2026.
