Zagreb Salaries Significantly Higher Than Last Year: Average Salary Reaches €1,782
07/10/2026

The average net salary paid to employees in legal entities in the area of the City of Zagreb for April 2026 amounted to 1,782 euros.
Although this represents a slight decline compared to the previous month, on an annual basis there is strong growth in the earnings of workers in the Croatian metropolis.
Movement of average earnings in the metropolis
A detailed analysis prepared by the competent city office shows exceptionally interesting trends in the labor market in the capital. Workers in Zagreb took home an average net salary of 1,782 euros for their work in April 2026. That amount is slightly lower, specifically by 0.4 percent, compared to earnings for March of the same year.
However, when these data are compared with last year's figures, specifically those from April 2025, when the average salary amounted to 1,642 euros, a noticeable and encouraging increase of 8.5 percent is visible.
A similar situation is also recorded with gross amounts. The average gross salary for April 2026 reached 2,577 euros. Like the net amount, the average gross salary also recorded a slight decline of 0.3 percent compared to March, but with an impressive jump of 9.8 percent compared to April of the previous year.
Oil industry at the top, clothing production at the bottom
Official statistical data clearly reveal huge differences in earnings depending on the sector of activity in which Zagreb residents are employed. The absolute record holders in terms of earnings are employees in the extraction of crude petroleum and natural gas. In that profitable sector, the average net salary for April amounted to an exceptionally high 3,845 euros, while the average gross amount rose to as much as 5,880 euros.
On the other side of the scale are workers employed in clothing production. Their average net earnings for the same month amounted to only 1,025 euros, while the gross amount was 1,393 euros. These data testify to a deep gap between the most lucrative industries and traditional manufacturing branches that struggle with low profitability.
How much is an hour of work worth and what does the median show?
For a deeper understanding of employees' standard of living, it is important to look at the value of an hour of work and the median salary. The average net hourly wage for April 2026 amounted to 10.01 euros, while the gross hourly amount was estimated at 14.47 euros.
The median salary provides a far more realistic picture of the standard of living because it eliminates the influence of extremely high and extremely low earnings of a small number of people. In April, it amounted to 1,495 euros net, or 2,102 euros gross. Translated into practice, this means that exactly half of employed citizens of Zagreb received a monthly salary lower than 1,495 euros, while the other half earned more than that amount.
Although the statistic on the average Zagreb salary of almost 1,800 euros seems very encouraging at first glance, a deeper analysis reveals a multilayered picture of the labor market in our metropolis. Strong annual growth in earnings is certainly a positive indicator of economic resilience and market adjustment, but it is clear that it does not spill over evenly to all layers of society. The huge difference between elite sectors such as the energy industry and those at the bottom of the scale such as the textile industry constantly warns us of growing inequalities among citizens. In addition, the fact that half of workers actually earn less than 1,495 euros clearly proves that the average often conceals the reality of a large portion of employed workers in Zagreb. For true long-term stability and a better standard of living for all residents, it will be crucial to ensure more even growth in earnings across all sectors of the economy.
