Croatian Man Complains: 'I Have Great Colleagues and a Good Salary, but I'm Terribly Bored at Work'

Few people can say they are completely happy at work; some are bothered by their boss, some by their colleagues, and some would gladly take a higher salary. However, there is also a special category of employees: those whose job is so easy that they are bored, while their years of service keep accumulating and their salary keeps coming in.

It was exactly this kind of story that a 25-year-old Master of Economics shared on Reddit, who got a job in accounting after graduating. Everything sounds ideal: a job close to home, a decent starting salary, good colleagues, and a lunch break at home. But the problem is that for more than half a year now, he has been doing almost nothing, writes Zagreb.info.

As he himself says: 'I have good colleagues, an okay salary for a beginner. My job is very close to home where I eat during my break. My problem is that more than half a year has passed, and I do nothing. Absolutely nothing.' His work duties boil down to occasional trips to the post office or tax office, and comparing analytical cards that he finished long ago. His superiors have no time for him, and every day he asks if there is anything to do. 'Okay, my professional experience is accumulating and they receive incentives for young employees. My question is what should I do in this situation?', he asked.

This kind of 'trouble' triggered an avalanche of comments, and many told him they would gladly trade places with him. 'Are you looking for people?', 'Are you hiring new employees?', 'Terrible conditions. Where can one apply for the job?', users joked.

When he revealed that he works in a private pharmaceutical company, he also received concrete advice: to use his free time for online courses, skill development, or even an additional job. One user wrote to him: 'Do online courses or something related to expand your knowledge. who cares that they can't be bothered dealing with you. Absorb as much knowledge from colleagues as you can. But realistically, until you're a senior (in any profession), in the first year at a new company, if you don't master the processes yourself (by listening to others) within your department, it's hard to get the responsibility to do something independently.'

Others shared their own experiences with 'overly relaxed' jobs: 'I have a similar situation, I'm done with work by 12 at the latest, after that until 16 I scroll Reddit or read something. Personally, I'm not complaining.' Some criticized rigid working hours: 'But do you realize how stupid that is? You finished your work and still have to sit in the office until 16. Instead of letting people go free so they can enjoy life. I hate the eight-hour workday.' Another female user added: 'I finished work 2 hours ago. And now I have to wait 3 more so I can close the laptop and say I'm done with the work I actually finished a few hours ago anyway.'

Still, there were also those who warned that experience is more important than years of service: 'You'll see later that it will matter more how many things you actually know how to do than how many years of experience you have. Also, learning on the side at work without applying it in practice is, in my opinion, not really an option because you'll forget most of what you don't use in practice. The basic level of accounting is realistically very boring, and after 2-3 years of that your head starts to hurt a little, so I think it's better for you to look for another job where you'll work (maybe even more than you're paid for at first, oh well) and learn the job so that in a few years you can find some OK job in accounting or start something of your own or both.'

This story perfectly illustrates the absurdities of the modern labor market: while some dream of an easier job, for others boredom is the greatest enemy. But one thing is certain: even when you 'do nothing,' you can always work on yourself.
