Employment in Croatia Slightly Declines in August, but Higher Than Last Year

The number of employed persons in Croatia in August 2025 reached almost 1.77 million, of whom nearly 822 thousand were women, according to the latest data from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics (DZS).
Compared with July this year, employment declined slightly, by 0.1 percent, while female employment fell by 0.2 percent. However, a comparison with August last year shows employment growth of 0.3 percent, and female employment growth of 0.8 percent.
Looking at the period from the beginning of 2025 until August, the total number of employed persons increased by 1.1 percent, while the number of employed women increased by 1.4 percent, confirming a positive trend in the Croatian labor market.
In the segment of legal entities in Croatia, in August there were approximately 1.51 million employed persons, among whom slightly more than 715 thousand were women. Compared with July, that number decreased slightly by 0.1 percent, as did the number of employed women in legal entities.
During the same year, the number of employed persons in legal entities remained almost unchanged compared with August last year, while the number of employed women in this segment increased by 0.7 percent. Also, during the first eight months of 2025, employment growth in legal entities of 0.9 percent was recorded, and employed women by 1.3 percent.
The number of employed persons in crafts and freelance professions in August decreased by half a percent compared with July, while female employment in this sector fell by 0.7 percent. A decline in the employment of insured agricultural workers was also recorded, by 0.3 percent overall, and by 0.2 percent among women.
Unemployment in Croatia in August 2025 increased by 3.2 percent compared with July, while the number of unemployed women increased by 3.0 percent. The registered unemployment rate for August amounted to 4.1 percent, and among women it was slightly higher, at 4.8 percent.
These data emphasize that the Croatian labor market is currently in a phase of slight stabilization with challenges in some sectors, but also with a higher share of women's employment in total employment.
In Croatia, employment growth was recorded in legal entities, while traditional sectors such as crafts and agriculture recorded a slight decline, reflecting changes in economic activity.
In addition to the overall indicators, DZS data also emphasize specifics in sectors such as trade, construction, healthcare, and education, where different employment trends and fluctuations are being recorded.
