English Is the Most Studied Language Across Almost All of Europe. But Not in Croatia…
01/25/2023

The POPULAR language-learning platform Duolingo has published statistics on trends in learning foreign languages around the world.
They published a map showing the most popular languages in all countries of the world. One look at the map is enough to notice that English is the most popular language (green color). English is the most common in almost all countries of Europe. But not in the Balkans.
If you look more closely, you will notice that Croatia, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina are in orange. That color indicates the German language. This information is not surprising when taking into account the fact that, for example, in 2019, 22 thousand Croats moved to Germany.
Along with English and German (in the Balkans), Spanish and Swedish are also popular among Europeans.
In the rest of the world, French is also popular, as well as the increasingly sought-after Korean. Duolingo also states that a major trend in 2022 was the global increase in the number of people learning the Ukrainian language.
