Foreign Workers in Varaždin to Be Taught Croatian
01/08/2024

The Public Open University in Varaždin has announced a vacancy for a teacher who will teach Croatian to foreign workers given the increase in the number of foreign workers in Varaždin County, reports the portal eVaraždin.
The director of POU Varaždin, Lana Velimirović Vukalović, pointed out that several applications have already arrived, and the implementation of the program “Croatian language for foreigners” will, she says, be a challenge. As she adds, there are pre-prescribed modules for conducting classes, but the methodology will be aligned depending on the homogeneity or heterogeneity of the program, that is, whether only, for example, workers from Nepal will participate or also workers from Bangladesh, India and the like.
“I expect that the program will bring, above all, the successful integration of foreign workers primarily into their companies, that is, into the firms where they work. Likewise, I expect that they will also successfully integrate into our society,” she concluded.
Never more permits issued for foreigners
According to data from the Croatian Police Administration, in the area of Varaždin County a total of 7,390 residence and work permits for foreigners from third countries, that is, those coming from outside the European Union, were issued from the beginning of 2023 until the end of November, which is the highest number of permits ever issued so far. That is a total of twice as many as the total number of permits issued for foreign workers in 2022. The largest number of residence and work permits was issued to citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Nepal, India, North Macedonia, and the Philippines.
