While many dream of living in Switzerland, Bruno Jelović decided to do exactly the opposite. This man from Travnik, known as the “Dogfather,” left the comfort and security of the West to return to Bosnia and Herzegovina and dedicate himself to caring for abandoned dogs.
His unusual decision and incredible dedication soon turned him into a symbol of humanity, and his book about his life journey became the best-selling read in Germany.
Bruno’s story begins in wartime Travnik, from where he fled to Switzerland as a child. For years, he built a new life there, but a return to his homeland for a family visit changed everything. The sight of stray dogs on the streets of Jajce deeply moved him and prompted him to take on a responsibility many avoid. Instead of turning his head away, Bruno decided to act.
On an estate near Jajce, he founded a ranch, which is now home to around 400 dogs. The ranch’s capacity can reach up to 5,000 animals, but Bruno emphasizes that his goal is not to keep the dogs confined, but to provide them with freedom and a dignified life. All the dogs on his ranch enjoy exceptionally good conditions, and special attention is devoted to sterilization and educating the local community, in order to prevent uncontrolled breeding and animal suffering.
Maintaining such a project requires enormous financial resources. Every month, Bruno spends around 80,000 euros on food, veterinary care, and employee salaries. For the first year and a half, he covered all the costs himself, but after his story reached the Swiss media, support and donations began arriving from all over the world.
Bruno does not only save dogs; he changes the awareness of the people around him. Through his example, he shows how important it is to be compassionate and responsible, and how an individual can initiate positive changes in society. His ranch has become a beacon of hope for abandoned animals, but also an inspiration to many who believe in a better tomorrow.
