How Much Workers in Bosnia and Herzegovina Earn: Average Salary Just €840

Official data from the Agency for Statistics of Bosnia and Herzegovina provide a clear overview of the financial situation of workers in that country.

According to their latest reports, the average monthly paid net salary per employee in legal entities for February 2026 amounted to 1,643 convertible marks.

Accordingly, the average salary of our neighbors converted into euros according to the official fixed exchange rate of 1.95583 marks for one euro amounts to 840 euros.

Movement and comparison of earnings

When earnings are compared with the beginning of the current year, more precisely with January 2026, a nominal decline of 0.1% was recorded. In real terms, the salary is lower by 0.6%.

However, the situation takes on a significantly more positive tone when compared with the same month last year. Compared with February 2025, the average paid salary increased nominally by 9.1%. For that same period, growth in the real index was also recorded, higher by 5.6%.

Record holders in the labor market

There are significant differences in the labor market of BiH between various economic sectors. By far the most lucrative sector is information and communications, where employees earn an average of 2,221 marks per month, which is approximately 1,136 euros.

Very close behind are financial activities and insurance activities with an average of 2,116 marks or 1,082 euros.

Exceptionally high earnings are also recorded in the public sector. Workers in public administration, defense, and compulsory social insurance earn an average of 2,103 marks, which translated into the European currency amounts to 1,075 euros. Among the activities that provide a salary higher than two thousand marks are also the production and supply of electricity and gas with 2,031 marks or 1,038 euros, as well as health and social care activities whose workers receive 2,002 marks or 1,023 euros.

Sectors with the lowest incomes

At the very bottom of the ranking are occupations that are crucial for tourism and everyday consumption, but are at the same time the lowest paid. By far the lowest average salaries are received by employees in accommodation, food preparation, and food service activities. Their average earnings amount to only 1,169 marks, or 598 euros.

A similar financial struggle is faced by workers in construction, whose average paid salary is 1,294 marks or 662 euros. A large number of citizens are employed in the wholesale and retail trade sector, where earnings amount to 1,361 marks, which is around 696 euros. Workers in the manufacturing industry also cannot boast high amounts given that their compensation for work averages 1,369 marks or 700 euros.

Economic reality and the burden on citizens

Although official statistics show a noticeable annual growth of over nine percent, a detailed look at individual sectors reveals structural weaknesses. The largest number of workers employed in essential branches such as trade, construction, and service activities earn amounts that are far below the national average. This disparity indicates that not everyone feels the growth in earnings equally and that financial progress is mainly driven by highly specialized and state services. Comparing these figures with the cost of living, it is completely obvious that the average citizen still faces a long road to securing a stable and carefree existence.
