Popular Food Delivery App Exits the Croatian Market

From October 6, users in Croatia will no longer be able to order food through the Bolt Food app.

The company has officially confirmed the withdrawal of this service, writes Zagreb.info. However, it emphasized that their other options, such as rides and electric scooter rentals, will still be available.

Bolt Food arrived on the domestic market in May 2020, when demand for food delivery surged due to the pandemic. The service was first available in Zagreb, and then expanded to Osijek and Split. By 2022, partnerships had been established with more than 600 restaurants, and later other cities were included, among them Rijeka, Zadar, Šibenik, Dubrovnik, Pula, and Karlovac. An additional grocery delivery option called Bolt Market was also introduced.

The business model was similar to the main competitors, Wolt and Glovo. Restaurants paid a commission, customers paid the order and delivery price, while couriers were formally partners rather than employees. The influx of orders enabled rapid growth, but financial results later did not keep pace with the initial momentum.

In 2023, the company nearly halved its revenue compared to the previous year, falling from 4.43 million euros to 2.22 million. Still, Bolt Food operated at a profit, 93 thousand euros in 2023 and 118 thousand in 2024. By comparison, competitors recorded significant losses or considerably lower profitability in the same period.

The departure of Bolt Food means that only two major players remain on the Croatian market, Wolt and Glovo. Until the beginning of October, users can continue using the app for orders, and after that only mobility services will remain on offer.
