Serbian Wages Rise Sharply: Average Exceeds €1,000, but Half of Workers Still Earn Below €806
06/30/2026

The average net salary in Serbia for April 2026 amounted to 121,805 dinars, or about €1,038. The gross salary for the same month amounted to 168,008 dinars, which is about €1,431.
The data was published by the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia, and the amounts in euros were calculated according to the official middle exchange rate of the National Bank of Serbia on the publication date, June 25, 2026, when €1 amounted to 117.3998 dinars, and rounded to the nearest whole amount.
Salaries are growing both nominally and in real terms
The data shows that salaries in Serbia continue to grow at a strong pace. Compared with April 2025, the average gross salary increased by 11.4% nominally and by 7.8% in real terms.
At the same time, the average net salary was 11.5% higher nominally, while real growth amounted to 7.9%. Real growth means that salaries increased even after taking price growth into account.
Growth visible in the first 4 months of the year as well
In the period from January to April 2026, the average gross salary in Serbia amounted to 164,682 dinars, or about €1,403. The average net salary in the same period was 119,504 dinars, which is about €1,018.
Compared with the same period last year, gross salaries increased by 11.5% nominally and 8.5% in real terms. Net salaries increased by 11.6% nominally and 8.6% in real terms.
This means that growth was not recorded in just one month, but is also visible at the level of the first 4 months of 2026.
Half of employees earn less than €806
However, the average salary does not show the full picture of the labor market. The median net salary in April amounted to 94,585 dinars, or about €806.
This means that 50% of employees in Serbia earned a salary up to that amount. In other words, although the average net salary amounts to about €1,038, a large share of employees earn noticeably less than the average.
The median salary is important because it better shows what the middle of employees receives. The average can be pushed up by higher salaries in certain activities, cities, and sectors.
Public sector above the overall average
The average net salary in the public sector in April amounted to 127,884 dinars, or about €1,089. This is higher than the overall average for Serbia, which was 121,805 dinars, or about €1,038.
Outside the public sector, the average net salary amounted to 119,336 dinars, which is about €1,016.
Among employees in legal entities, the average net salary was 129,707 dinars, or about €1,105. Among entrepreneurs and those employed by them, it amounted to 65,365 dinars, which is about €557.
Large differences by type of employment
Differences are also visible by type of employment. Employees in an employment relationship had an average net salary of 122,300 dinars, or about €1,042.
Employees outside an employment relationship received 73,685 dinars on average, which is about €628.
For gross amounts, the difference is also large. Employees in an employment relationship had an average gross salary of 168,653 dinars, or about €1,437, while for employees outside an employment relationship the gross amount was 105,192 dinars, or about €896.
Monthly growth was considerably more modest
Compared with March 2026, salary growth was considerably milder. The average gross salary in April was 0.4% higher nominally, but fell by 0.4% in real terms.
For the net salary, monthly growth amounted to 0.1% nominally, while a decline of 0.7% was recorded in real terms.
This shows that annual growth remains strong, but that movements at the monthly level can differ due to prices, seasonal payments, and the structure of calculations.
What is all counted as salary?
The Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia states that the salary survey is based on data from tax returns for withholding tax. Average salaries are calculated on the basis of calculated salaries for the reporting month and the number of employees expressed through the full-time equivalent.
The data includes payments on which taxes and contributions are paid. This includes regular salaries, compensation for on-call duty, night work, shift work, work on Sundays and holidays, compensation for annual leave, paid leave, bonuses, and similar payments.
Salary does not include compensation for sick leave longer than 30 days, commuting costs to and from work, daily allowances, accommodation and meals in the field, severance pay, and certain other one-off compensations.
The average is rising, but the median reveals a more realistic picture
The latest data confirms that salaries in Serbia continue to grow at a double-digit nominal rate. It is also important that real growth is positive, which means that increases have not been entirely eaten up by rising prices.
However, the median net salary of 94,585 dinars, or about €806, shows that the average does not say everything about living standards. For a large number of workers, the key figure is not the average 121,805 dinars, or about €1,038, but the amount actually received by the middle of employees.
In the remainder of the year, it will therefore be important to monitor not only the growth of the average salary, but also the movement of the median salary, because it is precisely this that better shows how much salary growth is felt among the majority of employees.
