Volkswagen Plans to Cut Up to 100,000 Jobs Amid Mounting Business Challenges
10/29/2026

Volkswagen's workforce reduction plans could affect around 100,000 jobs.
In addition to the previously agreed cuts of approximately 50,000 positions, a plan to eliminate another similar number was approved at the beginning of September. As reported by index.hr, the company is cutting costs due to increasingly difficult business conditions, and the plans have sparked strong opposition from unions and employee representatives.
Uncertainty in 4 German plants
The continuation of car production at the factories in Emden, Zwickau, Hannover, and Neckarsulm is also in question. Volkswagen is considering ending it if it does not find another purpose for those plants. This means that, alongside workforce reductions, changes are also being considered that would directly affect the future operations of certain factories.
Management seeks rapid changes
Pressure on employees comes after Volkswagen recorded a net loss of 5.82 billion euros from July to September. Operations are burdened by weaker sales in China, U.S. tariffs, and the costs of changes within the company. Chief Financial Officer Arno Antlitz said: 'We must act quickly and decisively.' He warned that current operating earnings, even without extraordinary costs, are not sufficient to finance future investments.
For employees, the key decisions therefore concern where the number of jobs will be reduced and which plants will continue production. The figure of 100,000 refers to planned cuts, not to that many layoffs already handed out. The future of the mentioned factories has also not yet been finally determined.
