Waiter Embezzled Around €8,500: ‘You Know, My Boss Didn’t Pay Me Overtime…’

Waiter Petar (44) was found guilty and convicted because he embezzled around 64,000 kuna, which amounts to about 8,500 euros, from two cafes where he worked.
According to the non-final verdict, Petar was a head waiter in two cafes on Zagreb's Tkalčićeva and, instead of depositing the money into the account, he stuffed three daily takings together with a deposit amounting to 64,000 kuna into his own pocket.
It all happened between 23 and 25 February. During the investigation, Petar generally admitted committing the criminal offense, but justified himself by citing his motive.
“I had the right to keep that money because my boss, despite the agreement made when I was hired, did not pay me a higher salary, bonuses, and overtime,” the waiter defended himself.
However, he expressed regret for the criminal offense he committed. But he still has not returned the money, so he ended up in court. He was sentenced to one year of a suspended prison sentence. He must also pay 1,000 kuna in criminal proceedings costs.
