Number of Bankruptcies in Germany Has Been Rising Steadily Since August

BERLIN – The number of bankruptcies in Germany rose again in June, the Federal Statistical Office announced on Thursday. Last month, 13.9 percent more companies filed for bankruptcy than 12 months earlier.

In May, that rate stood at 3.1 percent, and the number of companies in bankruptcy in the country has been continuously rising since August.

Bankruptcy proceedings enter the official statistics only after the first decision of the bankruptcy court, which means that the rate illustrates the situation three months earlier, the statisticians add.

Therefore, the final figures are available for April.

At that time, 1,428 corporate bankruptcy proceedings were registered across Germany, or 14.4 percent more than 12 months earlier.

Creditors' claims amounted to a total of 1.3 billion euros, and in April 2022 slightly more, 1.4 billion.

During the pandemic crisis, the state tried to ease the pressure on troubled companies through subsidies and a partial suspension of obligations, so the number of bankruptcies was lower than expected.
