More Than Half of Croatian Families Struggle to Cover Basic Costs

According to data for 2024, as many as 60% of households in Croatia face serious difficulties in covering basic monthly expenses, including utilities, rent, and food.
This places Croatia significantly above the European Union average, which stands at 42%, states index.hr. These figures confirm that a large number of citizens balance daily between income and basic living needs, while at the same time tracking expenses is becoming an ever greater challenge for average Croatian families.
At the top of the list of countries where citizens have the hardest time making ends meet is Greece, where as many as 86% of households report difficulties in covering basic living costs, while Bulgaria follows with 77%. Third place is shared by Slovakia with 66% and Romania with 65% of households facing financial constraints. In contrast, the lowest percentage of households with this problem is recorded in Germany at 18% and the Netherlands at 19%, while among the most stable economies Luxembourg stands out with 24%, Sweden with 25%, and Finland with 28%, showing significant differences in economic conditions within the European Union.
These figures highlight the growing challenges faced by Croatian citizens, pointing to the need for more effective support measures to reduce financial pressure on households and improve the quality of life in the country.
