Sad Day for Vukovar Manufacturing: Plant Shuts Down After Decades of Operation

Vukovar's economic scene is facing a serious blow following the official confirmation of the closure of the plant of the German company Ricosta.

This news leaves nearly one hundred and twenty workers without income, workers who for years formed the backbone of local footwear production. As reported by HRT, the decision to cease operations shocked employees who until the very last moment believed in the survival of their jobs.

Operating costs decided its stay in Croatia

The company's management finds the reason for such a drastic move in changed market circumstances and the rise in operating costs within the domestic framework. Mayor Marijan Pavliček points out that the increase in the minimum wage in Croatia, along with accompanying pressures, has made production less competitive compared to neighboring countries. Because of this, a strategic part of the production lines is being moved to Romania, as well as Bulgaria and Hungary, where conditions for investors are currently more financially favorable.

The end of an era for Vukovar's female workers

Among those losing their jobs, the majority are women with many years of experience for whom this job provided a stable livelihood and fair working conditions throughout the decade. The workers describe the atmosphere in the company as extremely professional and emphasize that the well-coordinated team and fair treatment by management were the reason they considered the workplace a second home. Employees nearing retirement are especially affected, as they now face an uncertain future and the need for a new beginning in their sixties.

Employment opportunities in local companies

Although the situation is extremely difficult, hope has emerged that part of the skilled workforce could find new employment at Vukovar's Borovo. The management of that legendary company has already begun analysis and compiling a list of workers in order to determine who among them could fit into their current production processes. Special focus has been placed on those who are only a few years away from their well-earned retirement so that they might be given a dignified end to their working lives within their profession.

Challenges of the domestic manufacturing industry

Ricosta's departure from Vukovar is a clear illustration of the broader issues facing Croatian light industry, especially the textile and footwear sectors, which are traditionally labor-intensive. While labor costs are justifiably rising in line with European standards and workers' needs, domestic manufacturers are finding it increasingly difficult to cope with global competition and low margins. Without systemic solutions or stronger technological modernization, Croatia risks further loss of such production branches, which are crucial for the sustainability of the local labor market in smaller urban areas.
