Austria on a Growth Path: Population Reaches 9.2 Million as Foreign Residents Take a Larger Share

Austria’s national statistics office “Statistik Austria” published a new report on Tuesday stating that at the beginning of 2025, 9,198,214 people were living in Austria, which is an increase of 39,464 people or 0.4 percent compared to a year earlier.

As stated in the report, the share of foreigners in the total population amounts to 20.2 percent (1,855,624 people), while last year that percentage was 19.7 percent.

The highest number of foreigners, that is, people with foreign citizenship, live in the Austrian capital and province of Vienna, where they make up 36.4 percent.

Austria has nine federal provinces. After Vienna, the highest number of foreigners live in the provinces of Vorarlberg (20.9 percent) and Salzburg (20.8 percent), while the fewest live in the province of Burgenland (11.5 percent).

“Vienna again had the highest percentage increase in population of all the federal provinces, with an increase of 1.1 percent, while the population in Carinthia increased only slightly by 0.1 percent, and in Burgenland it even decreased slightly,” emphasized Statistik Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.

At the beginning of this year, a total of 2,028,399 inhabitants lived in Vienna. The increase in Vorarlberg of 0.4 percent was also the national average, while the population increase in the provinces of Upper Austria (0.3 percent), and in Salzburg, Lower Austria, Tyrol and Styria (each 0.2 percent), was somewhat smaller than last year.

With a plus of 0.1 percent, the population increased the least in Carinthia in southern Austria, while in Burgenland, where around 35,000 Burgenland Croats also live, a minimal decline of minus 0.04 percent was even recorded.

Almost all Austrian media wrote on Tuesday that although the population increase in Austria recorded at the beginning of 2025 was somewhat smaller than in previous years (in 2023 it amounted to 0.6 percent or +53,978 people), as the statistics show, the number of Austrian citizens rose to 9.2 million. But also foreigners, who make up 20 percent of the total population of this Alpine country.
