Croatian Post Hires Enough Staff, Ends 'Deliver Mail in Your Building and Earn' Project

Croatian Post has made the decision to terminate the innovative project called 'Share the mail in your building and earn' which attracted significant public attention at the end of last year.
Although the initiative was conceived as assistance in delivering letter mail within large residential complexes, cooperation with resident deliverers was abruptly halted. As stated in its report by RTL Danas, the reason for this move lies in the national postal operator's claim that the number of permanently employed workers in the Zagreb area is now fully satisfactory.
What did this project mean for citizens?
For those who were not familiar with the details, this model functioned as a simple neighborhood assistance system with financial compensation. The idea was that one of the residents, who knows their neighbors and the layout of the mailboxes best, would take over the mail for the entire building and distribute it in their free time. In this way, postal workers did not have to spend hours in huge high-rises, while residents were given the opportunity for additional income right at their doorstep.
Loss of income and disappointment of participants
One of those who supplemented the household budget in this way is Ms. Zdenka, for whom this engagement brought between 150 and 200 euros per month. Since she works for minimum wage, that amount was crucial for covering basic living expenses. She received the information about the termination of cooperation through official channels, along with a notice of deregistration from mandatory insurance, which unpleasantly surprised her because she performed the job conscientiously and with the support of the other co-owners.
Official explanation and filling job positions
Croatian Post, however, emphasizes that the project was actually successful because it served as an unusual channel for recruiting new employees. According to information reported by net.hr, a certain number of participants decided on permanent employment at the Post after trying out the delivery job through this model. The management claims that in Zagreb there is currently not a single street without a sufficient number of postal workers, meaning that the need for such temporary solutions has ceased to exist.
Challenges of delivery in large buildings
Representatives of residents in large Zagreb high-rises express regret over this outcome because they believe that no one can deliver mail more accurately than someone who lives in that building. In buildings with more than four hundred residents and numerous business premises, postal workers often face the chaos of unlabeled mailboxes. Residents were satisfied because letters arrived on time and at the correct addresses, while they now fear the return of old problems with delays and lost shipments.
